Particle and size analyzer

Particle size analysis in accordance to ISO 13322-2:2006 are based on a) free falling systems, b) moving substrate (belt) or c) at conveyor discharge point. For cylindrical particles method b) (on moving substrate (belt))  is considered to be the best possible method.  The reason for that is that particles are  aligned on the belt (meaning in 2 axes) due to their cylindrical shape.  Most systems on the market are based on a) (free falling systems).  The advantage   is that a large number of particles can be measured in a short period of time. Disadvantage is that particles fall and thus are measured in all orientations. Therefore either the particles have to be aligned using a guide plate before passing the camera, or the particles with unwanted orientations have to be identified (by using particle shape parameters) and then excluded from the analysis. For some of  samples, guide plates work well – for others they don’t.  Then filtering of particles with unwanted orientation becomes necessary – although this seem to work quite well in most cases, the inherent disadvantages of this method are: (i) The number of measured particles is reduced; (b) Particles that are important (e.g. such ones that are much too long) might also be excluded from the analysis.  
Measuring particles through c) (at conveyer discharge point) does not yield as good results as method b). For clients interested in ISO 13322-2:2006 pariticle size analysis therefore the The Morphious B1 (BT) system, is the best choice.
